Athletic and Dance-Related Injuries
Athletes may deal with many different types of medical personnel after an injury. Athletes also may be referred by their primary care doctors to a sports medicine doctor or other sports medicine specialists for further evaluation and treatment. The following is information from the American Academy of Pediatrics about the most common sports medicine specialists.

The Ponseti Method for the Management of Clubfoot
An idiopathic clubfoot has a very high arch and turns inward toward the other leg, with the toes pointed down and backwards. The foot is quite stiff. The Achilles tendon, located behind the ankle, is tight. Idiopathic clubfoot is the most common serious musculoskeletal birth defect worldwide. In the United States, about one in 1,000 infants is born with a clubfoot (or clubfeet, as 40% of cases involve both feet).

Fracture Care
Fractures that involve injury to the growth plate sometimes need surgery to minimize the risk of future growth problems. Fractures around the elbow often cause the arm to heal abnormally, resulting in a crooked position. Many require surgery to minimize this risk. Children with fractures near the elbow may be referred to an orthopedic specialist.

Spine Conditions
Our spine is naturally curved in order to distribute the weight of the body. A side-view X ray of a soldier standing rigidly at attention would show the cervical spine in his neck arched slightly forward. The twelve thoracic vertebrae curve gently to the rear. Then the lumbar spine, which bears most of our upper-body weight, arches forward as it nears the pelvis.

Gait Concerns and Concussion Management
A concussion is an injury to the brain that disrupts normal brain function, typically temporarily. It is usually caused by a blow or jolt to the head. However, a concussion may also occur from a hit to the body that produces a reflex force to the head. A concussion may also be called a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Concussions should be taken seriously. All athletes with suspected concussions should not return to full sports practice or participation until cleared by a doctor or another qualified health care professional.
